MORT WEISS QUARTET/Four of Us:
Following Weiss' 'comeback' is one of those fun jazz stories. Hanging up his clarinet for 40 years before touching it again in 2001, Weiss shows he's one of those guys that never lost the touch.
A hard bopper all the way, he fronts some like minded players here that never played together before and they blow up a delightful storm. Hitting a bunch of standards from Sinatra to Sonny Rollins (yep, a great workout on
"St. Thomas", a deceptive number that can either be a showcase or a train wreck), Weiss and compadres turn it up and turn it out. A great swinging bop date that grabs your ears and doesn't let go.
